Somewhere along the way, society has lost reverence for the Sacred Mother. And that is reflected in so many ways in life and work, and simply in the range of maternity and nursing clothes available. What I found was so ugly, dull, Unflattering, hardly a celebration of all that you are and including who you were!
We're told to shrink, literally, to bounce back, before we can step back in to the world feeling beautiful again. Our powerful magic has been disregarded and shoved to the side. The maternity and nursing clothes available have told us bluntly to wear whatever works for this phase and deal with it until you can 'fit back in' to your old self. Disappear until society approves.
This isn't a phase, this is a beautiful tumultuous transformation. Iyadé is here for you because Post Partum is forever!
I’m Wunmi.
I created Iyadé as a solution to a very specific problem! Wanting to feel fashionable and still show up as a breastfeeding mother.
In 2024 I attended my first Comic Con and the schedule was tight. I had 10 mins built in to my schedule to pump every few hours, but the schedule didn't allow for a costume change. No time to change in to a pumping bra, change out of my fancy outfit, pump, and then get back in to my fancy outfit. And so I got to designing! I developed my first Iyadé dress and rigged my underwire bra so I could pump with support. And it worked! No one would ever know it was a nursing dress and I felt beautiful and oh so proud of solving the problem! And most importantly, I felt like myself again!
It was wild to me that I'd spent a year wearing clothes I didn't feel good in so I could pump or nurse. I couldn’t find anything that reflected how powerful, complex, and alive this new role of Mother really is. I had chosen between being fully available and accessible to my daughter, and feeling confident in my new mighty body? I picked my daughter every time, but it was an unnecessary choice, I had proven both could be done!
I learnt a lot with that first prototype and shared my discoveries with master tailors. Eventually I developed the Winged Let Down, a patent pending design, that allows for contouring of the body, and working with gravity for efficient milk let down.
Every piece is made with handmade West African batik using organic cotton, in collaboration with artisans in Ghana and Nigeria. Ghana is where my grandmother, the seamstress was born, and Nigeria is where I was born.
This isn’t fast fashion. This is intentional. Small batch production of unique fabrics and designs.
Every piece is made to meet you exactly where you are, changing with each trimester and way beyond.

Camouflage the chaos of life with kids and still look good doing it. Our intricate designs mean no matter if it's spit up or spaghetti bolognes, you don't have to apologize for the mess, we camouflage and keep things moving! It's liberating, trust me!

Our body's change month to month when pregnant, hour to hour when nursing, and honestly just day to day as human! Iyadé grows and changes with you. Giving you the give you need when you need it, whether it's swelling breasts or you had a big dinner! Iyadé moves with you!

We are a far cry from the trad wife era. We're working mums, stay at home mums, and everything in between. We don't pretend this is easy, and we don't shy away from our might. We embrace the messiness of spilt milk, the unpredictability of motherhood, and honour all the we were, all that we are and all we are growing to be!
